BABY SAFETY

Florida – A Lauderdale Lakes woman is accused of driving with her 5-month-old baby in the trunk of a car to avoid getting a ticket for not having a car seat. Broward sheriff’s deputies conducting a traffic stop early Tuesday found the baby lying on a pair of large hedge-cutting shears and surrounded by potentially hazardous items, Judge John “Jay” Hurley said, reading from a police report during first-appearance court Tuesday afternoon. As the deputy headed back to the cruiser, another deputy heard crying coming from inside the trunk. They opened it and found Breona Watkins’ baby, Hurley said. Breona Synclair Watkins, 19, was arrested and charged with child abuse, resisting an officer and five traffic-related offenses, including driving without a license and failure to have a child restraint.

SICK PUNK!!

A Pennsylvania teen may face up to two years behind bars for allegedly taking a photo of himself simulating oral sex with a statue of Jesus, Kron 4 reports. The photo was taken in front of Love in the Name of Christ, a Christian organization in Everett, Pennsylvania, and posted on Facebook back in July. On Tuesday, the 14-year-old — whose name has not been released by police — was charged with desecration of a venerated object, the Smoking Gun reported. If convicted, he could wind up spending two years in a juvenile jail, according to Kron 4.“Desecration” is defined in Pennsylvania as ““Defacing, damaging, polluting or otherwise, physically mistreating in a way that the actor knows will outrage the sensibilities of persons likely to observe or discover the action.” The teen's original Facebook post garnered 124 Facebook comments, ranging from “Amazing” and “this is heaven” to “this is repulsive, even if you don’t believe you could at least have respect for those who do and those who ARE going to Heaven…you disgusting [sic], disturbed, disrespectful little punk ass bitch.”

MONKEYING AROUND

The federal government reportedly has spent more than $3 million to get monkeys drunk in order to study the effect the alcohol has on body tissue. The Washington Times reported Friday on a host of questionable grant programs administered by the National Institutes of Health, including a multi-year project to study if over-drinking causes gamblers to lose more money. The monkey project, which reportedly has cost taxpayers $3.2 million so far, is being led by the Oregon Health & Science University. Researchers say the work will “bridge the gap” between studies that focus on rodents and human research. According to the Times, they say it will allow the "alcohol research community to better understand disease processes associated with alcoholism." As part of the research, scientists reportedly force monkeys to drink too much and then study their tissue for damage. NIH argues that its grants help scientists and students in their "potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist." David Williams, president of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, told the Times the money is being doled out “with no real consideration of whether the projects being funded are of any value to taxpayers.”

HOT DOG

REDDING, Calif. — A Northern California man has been arrested after his ex-girlfriend said he cooked her dog and fed it to her. Ryan Watenpaugh of Palo Cedro was arrested Thursday. He remains jailed Friday. Watenpaugh’s ex told police he had repeatedly struck her while they were dating and that after one assault, she left her Redding apartment and returned to find her Pomeranian, “Bear,” missing. Police say the couple briefly reconciled last week and Watenpaugh cooked the woman a meal. But she told police he later texted her and asked how her dog had tasted. On Tuesday, Watenpaugh allegedly left two of the dog’s paws outside her door. Police say Watenpaugh has denied killing or cooking the dog. He was booked for animal cruelty, domestic violence, stalking and false imprisonment
