MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A West Virginia preacher who followed his father into the rare practice of handling snakes to prove faith in God died after being bitten during an outdoor service involving the reptiles.  Mark Randall "Mack" Wolford, 44 – whose own father died in 1983 after suffering a fatal bite – had been bitten before and survived. But he died earlier this week after witnesses say a timber rattler bit him on the thigh. Wolford's sister and a freelance photographer told media outlets it happened during a Sunday service at Panther State Forest. Lauren Pond, a freelance photojournalist from Washington, D.C., didn't immediately return messages Thursday but told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph she was among 25 people at the service. She saw Wolford bitten but said congregants were unfazed.

"I don't think anyone necessarily expected it," she told the newspaper, "but they've dealt with it before so it's not such a huge shock, maybe." Bluefield Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Becky Ritter said Thursday that Wolford was a patient and died Monday, but that federal privacy laws prevented her from releasing additional information.

Texas Judge Sentences Honors Student to Jail for Missing School

A Texas judge threw an 11th-grade honors student in jail for repeatedly missing school in the hope that he could make an example of her.
Diane Tran, 17, works two jobs while taking dual-credit and advanced placement classes at Willis High School in Willis, Texas, KHOU-TV reported. Her parents divorced and moved away, leaving her to support an older brother at Texas A&M University and a baby sister who lives with relatives. She lives with the family of one of her employers, the owners of a wedding venue.
Tran told KHOU she doesn’t want to miss school, but is so exhausted sometimes that she can’t make it to her morning classes before attendance is taken. Other times she even ends up missing the day entirely..
“She goes from job to job, from school she stays up ’til 7 o’clock in the morning doing her homework,” Tran’s friend Devin Hill told the station.
Judge Lanny Moriarty warned Tran back in April not to miss any more school; when she missed again last week, he issued a summons and had her arrested in open court Wednesday. Tran was sentenced to a night in jail and ordered to pay a $100 fine.
“If you let one (truant student) run loose, what are you gonna’ do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too?” Moriarty asked.
He admitted to KHOU after the fact that he didn‘t know the full circumstances of Tran’s situation. He said he might work to have the arrest removed from her record, where it would otherwise remain.

According to police sources, a road ranger saw a naked man chewing on another man’s face and shouted on his loud speaker for him to back away. Meanwhile, a woman also saw the incident and flagged down a police officer who was in the area. The officer, who has not been identified, approached and, seeing what was happening, also ordered the naked man to back away. When he continued the assault, the officer shot him, police sources said. The attacker failed to stop after being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots. The attack occurred around 2 p.m. on a pedestrian walkway just south of the Herald’s offices. With the attacker dead, lying nude on the pavement, officers and paramedics were able to get to his victim and rush him to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police sources say the man had virtually no face and was unrecognizable.

Larry Vega said he witnessed the attack, writing to Local 10, “I stopped a City of Miami police officer and informed him that a homeless man was killing another person by biting and ripping his face to death.” Vega also said, “The police officer confronted the aggressor, and he was like a rabid dog and confronted the officer. Then the officer shot the person four times.” According to the Herald, investigators believe the attacker may have been suffering from “cocaine psychosis” — a “drug-induced craze that bakes the body internally and often leads the affected to strip naked and try to cool off.”Police believe the victim may have been homeless and laying down when the attacker pounced.

Jerald Reiter, 55, of Cascade, Iowa, was backing his truck out of the Dog House Lounge parking lot Sunday night when police stopped him. His passengers? A small zebra in the back seat and a macaw parrot on his shoulder, the Telegraph Herald reports. Officers said Reiter's blood-alcohol level was .14 (the limit is .08), so he was charged with driving drunk (officially, operating while intoxicated). He admits he was behind the wheel but was going to let his other passenger -- his human buddy -- do the driving, according to the local Gazette. Reiter thinks someone in the crowd of gawkers called police to complain about the "welfare" of his novel pets, which often go for rides. He said his local watering hole often allows pets, but not Sunday night, because the owner told him food was being served."

Police in the Canadian province of Ontario say they are holding a man who is accused of swallowing a $20,000 diamond as long as it takes for him to produce the evidence. It has been nearly a week since Richard Mackenzie Matthews, 52, is alleged to have switched a diamond at Precision Jewellers and swallowed the real one. Matthews has been held at police headquarters while they wait for the 1.7-carat stone to pass through his system. Sgt. Brett Corey said Thursday that Matthews has gone to the washroom numerous times, but the diamond hasn't passed. Corey says a recent X-ray showed a pair of fake diamonds, or cubic zirconiums, stuck in the man's intestines but because a diamond is translucent, it isn't visible. He says the suspect is eager to get the ordeal over with and is co-operating. In the early stages, Corey says Matthews was being given laxative type foods, but is now being fed whatever he wants, in an effort to get things moving.

JACKSON, Mich., May 17 (UPI) -- A Michigan couple said their family will no longer be eating fast food after the woman's 14-year-old son found a piece of a human finger in his Arby's sandwich. Jamie Vail and Joe Wheaton said the woman's son, Ryan Hart, discovered the finger fragment when he bit into his Arby's junior roast beef sandwich at the Jackson restaurant and spit the object out to identify it as a piece of finger, the Jackson Citizen-Patriot reported Thursday. Jackson Police and the Jackson County Health Department determined a worker had cut her finger on a meat slicer at the restaurant moments prior to the incident. Steve Hall, environmental health director for the Jackson County Health Department, said he believes other workers stepped in to the woman's station without being aware of what had taken place.

TAKING THE KIDS FOR A RIDE

An Indiana man accused of driving three blocks with four children strapped to the hood of his car was being held in jail Tuesday on charges of drunken driving and neglect, police said. Fort Wayne police said the mother of three of those children also was being held on neglect charges. The other child belonged to the man. None of the children — aged 4, 5, 6 and 7 — was injured, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said. A witness called police Monday evening after seeing a man and woman using a tow strap to tie the children to the car in a liquor store parking lot and then drive away, Foster said.
"Apparently they were traveling a short distance, and he believed they would enjoy it," Foster said.
She said a U.S. marshal overheard the police radio traffic, spotted the car and pulled it over.
Foster said she had no information about the children's reaction to the ride.
The man had a blood alcohol content of .17, more than twice Indiana's legal limit for driving, Foster said. Police said the woman also appeared to be intoxicated. The man and woman's relationship was unclear.

Authorities say a northern New York man had his friend shoot him in the leg with a rifle because he wanted to know what it feels like to be shot. State police in St. Lawrence County say the shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Sunday in the rural town of Stockholm when 25-year-old Shawn Mossow of neighboring Norfolk relented to his friend's repeated requests and shot him once in the right leg with a .22-caliber rifle. The 24-year-old man from Norfolk is expected to make a full recovery. Police haven't released his name. Mossow was charged with reckless endangerment. He's being held in the county jail on $10,000 bail. It could be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.

A Florida man is accused of having sex with Christie Brinkley... not the 80s supermodel and former wife of Billy Joel, but a Great Dane with the same name. Police say Armand M. Pacher, 64, told his vet's office that he was sleeping with Christie Brinkley, and not just to keep warm on a cold night.  "She doesn't seem to enjoy it as much when we have sex," he allegedly said,  "Maybe it's because I haven't been as energetic lately and that's why she's not enjoying it.'' The vet didn't think it was so funny -- and says when he found signs of forced sexual activity on Christie Brinkley, he called the cops. The vet told police that the evidence on the spayed dog couldn't have been from a another dog.

KEMAH, Texas — Police say a man arrested in a Southeast Texas city for riding his unicycle in the nude was distracting drivers and creating a hazard. Kemah (KEE'-muh) police Chief Greg Rikard (RY'-kurd) says 45-year-old Joseph Glynn Farley was not intoxicated or impaired when he was arrested Wednesday on a bridge in the city 20 miles southeast of Houston. Rikard says Farley had been falling off the unicycle and into traffic. Farley told officers that he liked the feeling of riding without his clothes, which were found at the base of the bridge. Police charged Farley, of Clear Lake, with misdemeanor indecent exposure. Bond is set at $1,500. Online jail records did not list an attorney for Farley.
